In 1585, the townspeople of Annecy, Savoy, France, became alarmed over an apple that gave out a “great and confused noise.” Believing it to be full of demons, they pushed the apple into a river.

The fenghuang — sometimes referred to as the Chinese phoenix — is a legendary bird said to reign over all other fowl. It carries positive connotations, being a traditional harbinger of good luck, embodiment of Confucian virtues, and symbol of honesty, fidelity and the imperial crown. The bird of folk tale appeared in prosperous times, marking the beginning of a new era or the birth of a successful ruler; it would do good deeds on earth and then return to its celestial abode to await the dawn of a new era. The male phoenix is called a feng and a female a huang; together, they symbolize the balance of yin and yang and married bliss. The song of a fenghuang is said to be exceptionally beautiful; the bird holds a special appreciation for human music.
Much to everyone’s general disappointment, the fenghuang is not the glorious bird hybrid of myth. Oral tradition fails to specify that face of a rooster means a silkie chicken that resembles an avian Pekingese. In reality, it is more akin to a semi-omniscient herald of changing times. Most often this is in the form of the birth or death of an emperor, but often can have a more ominous meaning; a fenghuang can appear when the tides of war are shifting, or an invasion is being launched.
Unfortunately, the only known feng in existence is a rather spoiled prince named Rongmao who could hardly disembody fidelity more than he already does. Used to having everything dropped in his lap, he does little else all day but indulge himself, take risks and procrastinate marriage, much to other deity’s disdain. The only part that perhaps might ring true is music, but this is only to be judged from the wild bird parties he takes every opportunity to throw.
As the Ming Dynasty wanes, Rongmao serves to warn in his own relaxed way of the upending Qing dynasty usurpation, Japanese invasion of the Joseon kingdom and destruction of the mirror to the spirit world.

Break Through

New paint plus an additional detail shot - it’s kind of a tall piece so it’s hard to really get tumblr to do it much justice. There’s a slightly bigger version of it you can see as a whole here.
